The invenction of smokeless powder and improvement of ammunitions production standards
allowed at the end of 1800 the production of semi-automatic pistols. Many armies maintained
revolvers as ordnance sidearms, while others adopted instead the new automatic pistols.
Armies distributed sidearms to officers,  NCO and to the special troops that were not operating
at the forefront, as the gunners, or as a back-up weapon to machine gun crew, already burdened
with the weapon and the ammunition.
The armies gave the priority to the production of rifles, so there were many types of pistols,
often officers bought personal guns according to their personal taste.
Often the same armies procured weapons produced for the civilian market,
to fill their require, some little countries such as Montenegro had laws forcing citizens
to buy large-caliber revolver, so in case of mobilization
all recalled would have a weapon available.

The energy created by the ammunition is indicative, as it depended out of stocks and from
various factories that produced them.

The handguns are presented more or less in scale.

Interesting. Pistols during this time were much more diverse in shape than now, like Mauser C96, not included there. When modern pistols look mostly like Colt 1911 and other Browning's designs.
